UK Launches Strategy to Address Deepfakes

The UK government launched a new initiative to tackle deepfakes.

The initiative seeks to lead the global response to deepfake content, including its growing use in fraud, impersonation, and deceptive scams.

Key points include:

➡️ Deepfake Detection Framework: The government is working with Microsoft, academics, and tech experts to develop a world‑first framework to evaluate deepfake detection tools against real‑world threats;

➡️ Industry Standards: The framework will set clear expectations for industry on deepfake detection standards to improve defences against fraud-related synthetic media;

➡️ Growing Scale of Threat: The government reports deepfake generation rising from around 500,000 in 2023 to an estimated 8 million by 2025 signalling rapidly growing fraud risk; and

➡️ Law Enforcement & Public Protection: By rigorously testing and benchmarking detection technologies, the initiative aims to strengthen law enforcement’s ability to stay ahead of offenders and protect victims of fraud and deception.

Firms should track deepfake detection developments and assess the impact of deepfakes fraud on customer authentication.
