ESAs Warn Against AI Scams with New Consumer Guide

The European Supervisory Authorities (ESAs) published a consumer guide on AI-enabled fraud and scams.

The factsheet helps consumers identify, prevent and respond to online fraud and scams that increasingly leverage artificial intelligence (AI).

Key points include:

➡️ AI-enabled scam tactics: Fraudsters use deepfake voices and videos, impersonation, phishing and fake investment opportunities to make scams more convincing and harder to detect;

➡️ Clear warning signs: The guidance flags fraud indicators such as urgent payment requests, requests for personal or banking details, untraceable payment methods, suspicious links, and AI-generated audio or video anomalies; and

➡️ Practical prevention steps: The guide sets out practical steps consumers can take to protect themselves.

✅ Firms should reinforce consumer education, adapt controls for AI-driven fraud risks, and ensure clear escalation and reporting pathways as scam techniques continue to evolve.
