Cryptocurrency Fraud Report for 2023 published by FBI

The FBI published its Cryptocurrency Fraud Report for 2023

The report was released to bring attention to losses from cryptocurrency-related fraud, prevalent schemes utilising cryptocurrencies, and public protection measures.

 

Highlights from 2023 data include:

  • The FBI Internet Crime Complaint Centre (IC3) received over 69,000 complaints from the public regarding financial fraud involving the use of cryptocurrency;
  • Estimated fraud losses with a nexus to cryptocurrency totaled more than $5.6 billion;
  • The exploitation of cryptocurrency was most pervasive in investment scams, where losses accounted for almost 71 percent of all losses related to cryptocurrency.
