A recent report by RUSI recognises economic crime as a growing national security threat, in light of escalating levels of fraud in 2022, as well as the UK’s role in Russia-related money laundering.
The report proposes a national security-based model which would establish new core functions:
- Strategic system and data analytics lead through the National Economic Crime Centre (NECC);
- Single command structure with the City of London Police (CoLP) as the policing lead for FC;
- Proactive investigation through the use of regional ‘super-hub’ networks to support the command structure.
As the need for further policing continues to be highlighted, firms should be sure they have relevant measures and controls firmly in place.
